Step-by-step instructions

1. Cast on

  1. 1Cast on 154 stitches with 4mm needles in colour A.

2. Knit the stripes

  1. 1Knit every row (garter stitch). Work 20 rows in each colour, changing at the start of a row.
  2. 2Carry the unused yarns loosely up the side, or cut and rejoin — weave the ends in later.
  3. 3Continue until you have worked through all five colours. Repeat the colour sequence until the blanket measures 90cm.

3. Cast off and finish

  1. 1Cast off loosely in the final colour. Weave in all the colour-change ends neatly along the side edge.

Top tip: Choose a machine-washable DK for a baby blanket — it will need plenty of washes!
