What you'll need

  • 1 x 100g ball of DK yarn
  • A pair of 4mm (UK 8 / US 6) knitting needles
  • A wool/darning needle

Tension: 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm in stocking stitch on 4mm needles.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Cast on and rib

  1. 1Cast on 112 stitches with 4mm needles.
  2. 2Work in k1, p1 rib for 5cm.

2. Stocking stitch body

  1. 1Continue in stocking stitch until the hat measures 18cm from the cast-on edge, finishing after a WS row.

3. Shape the crown

  1. 1Row 1 (RS): *k12, k2tog* to end. (104 sts)
  2. 2Row 2 and all WS rows: purl.
  3. 3Row 3: *k11, k2tog* to end. (96 sts)
  4. 4Continue decreasing on every RS row until 8 stitches remain.

4. Finish

  1. 1Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight. Sew side seam with mattress stitch. Weave in ends.
