What you'll need
- 1 x 100g ball of DK yarn
- A pair of 4mm (UK 8 / US 6) knitting needles
- A wool/darning needle
Tension: 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm in stocking stitch on 4mm needles.

Step-by-step instructions
1. Cast on and rib
- 1Cast on 112 stitches with 4mm needles.
- 2Work in k1, p1 rib for 5cm.
2. Stocking stitch body
- 1Continue in stocking stitch until the hat measures 18cm from the cast-on edge, finishing after a WS row.
3. Shape the crown
- 1Row 1 (RS): *k12, k2tog* to end. (104 sts)
- 2Row 2 and all WS rows: purl.
- 3Row 3: *k11, k2tog* to end. (96 sts)
- 4Continue decreasing on every RS row until 8 stitches remain.
4. Finish
- 1Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight. Sew side seam with mattress stitch. Weave in ends.
Top tip: Try it in a self-striping DK for an easy colourwork effect with zero effort.
