Step-by-step instructions
1. Cast on
- 1Cast on 217 stitches loosely with 4.5mm needles (or any multiple of 18 + 1).
2. Feather-and-fan pattern
- 1Row 1 (RS): knit.
- 2Row 2 (WS): purl.
- 3Row 3: k1, *(k2tog) three times, (yfwd, k1) six times, (k2tog) three times* to end.
- 4Row 4: knit (this creates the ridge on the RS).
- 5Repeat rows 1-4 until the shawl reaches your desired depth (about 50cm).
3. Finish
- 1Cast off loosely. Weave in all ends.
- 2Block the shawl by soaking it in lukewarm water, pinning it out on a flat surface to open up the lace, and letting it dry completely.
Top tip: Blocking transforms lace knitting — do not skip it. The stitches relax and the pattern opens up like magic.
