Step-by-step instructions

1. Cast on

  1. 1Cast on 217 stitches loosely with 4.5mm needles (or any multiple of 18 + 1).

2. Feather-and-fan pattern

  1. 1Row 1 (RS): knit.
  2. 2Row 2 (WS): purl.
  3. 3Row 3: k1, *(k2tog) three times, (yfwd, k1) six times, (k2tog) three times* to end.
  4. 4Row 4: knit (this creates the ridge on the RS).
  5. 5Repeat rows 1-4 until the shawl reaches your desired depth (about 50cm).

3. Finish

  1. 1Cast off loosely. Weave in all ends.
  2. 2Block the shawl by soaking it in lukewarm water, pinning it out on a flat surface to open up the lace, and letting it dry completely.

Top tip: Blocking transforms lace knitting — do not skip it. The stitches relax and the pattern opens up like magic.
