Step-by-step instructions

1. Cuff (make 2)

  1. 1Cast on 40 stitches with 4mm needles.
  2. 2Work in k2, p2 rib for 7cm.

2. Thumb gusset

  1. 1Continue in stocking stitch. On row 3, place a marker after stitch 19 and before stitch 21. Increase (M1) after the first marker and before the second marker on every 3rd row until you have 13 thumb stitches between the markers.

3. Thumb and hand

  1. 1Put the 13 thumb stitches on waste yarn. Cast on 1 stitch over the gap and continue the hand in stocking stitch until it reaches the tip of your little finger.
  2. 2Shape the top: *k2, k2tog* across the row. Repeat decreases every row until 8 stitches remain. Thread yarn through and pull tight.
  3. 3Knit the thumb: pick up the 13 held stitches plus 3 from the hand. Work in stocking stitch for 5cm, then decrease and close as above.

4. Finish

  1. 1Sew the side seam with mattress stitch. Weave in all ends. Make the second mitten.

Top tip: Try on the mitten as you knit to check the thumb placement — hands vary a lot in shape!
