Step-by-step instructions
1. Make the centre ring
- 1Chain 4 and join with a sl st into the first chain to form a ring.
- 2Round 1: ch3 (counts as first tr), 2tr into ring, *ch2, 3tr into ring* three times, ch2, join with sl st to top of ch3. You now have four 3-tr clusters with ch2 corners.
2. Build the square
- 1Round 2: sl st to the first ch2 corner. In each ch2 corner space work (3tr, ch2, 3tr); work ch1 along each straight side. Join with sl st.
- 2Round 3 onwards: keep working (3tr, ch2, 3tr) into every corner and 3tr into every ch1 side space, with ch1 between clusters.
- 3Change colour each round for a classic look. Continue until the square measures 40cm — this is the front of your cushion.
- 4Make a second square the same size for the back (or two smaller pieces that overlap for an easy envelope opening).
3. Join and finish
- 1Place the two squares together with wrong sides facing. Using dc, crochet through both layers around three sides.
- 2Insert the cushion pad, then dc across the final side to close (or add buttons and buttonholes for a removable cover).
- 3Weave in all the ends neatly.
Top tip: New to granny squares? Work the first round in a light colour so it is easy to see where your clusters and corners go.
