Step-by-step instructions
1. Start the red petals
- 1With red yarn, make a slip knot and chain 4. Join into a ring with a sl st in the first chain.
- 2Round 1: ch1, then work 10 dc into the centre of the ring. Join with a sl st to the first dc. (10 sts)
2. Shape the petals
- 1Round 2 (petals): work 5 petals evenly around, one into every 2 stitches. Into the first stitch work: 1 sl st, then into the NEXT stitch work (1htr, 3tr, 1htr) all in the same stitch, then sl st into the following stitch. That is one petal.
- 2Repeat *sl st, then (1htr, 3tr, 1htr) into next st, sl st into next st* around until you have 5 rounded petals.
- 3Join with a sl st and fasten off red, leaving a 15cm tail. Weave the tail to the back.
3. Add the black centre
- 1With black yarn, make a slip knot and chain 2. Work 6 dc into the second chain from the hook (a small tight circle). Join with a sl st.
- 2Fasten off, leaving a 20cm tail.
- 3Use the tail and wool needle to sew the black circle firmly to the centre front of the red poppy, covering the middle ring.
4. Finish
- 1Weave in all remaining ends on the back.
- 2Sew a brooch pin or safety pin to the back if you want to wear it, or stitch it straight onto a hat, bag or wreath.
Top tip: For a fuller, more ruffled poppy, work 4tr instead of 3tr in the middle of each petal — the extra stitch adds a lovely wave to the edge.
