What you'll need

  • 2 x 50g balls of DK cotton yarn
  • A 4mm (UK 8 / US G-6) crochet hook
  • A metal or wooden ring (4-5cm diameter) for hanging
  • A wool/darning needle

Abbreviations

dcdouble crochet (UK)
sl stslip stitch

Step-by-step instructions

1. Hanging loop

  1. 1Cut 3 lengths of yarn, each 3 metres long. Fold them through the ring so you have 6 strands hanging down.
  2. 2Alternatively, ch 6, join to the ring with sl st, and work 12dc around the ring to cover it.

2. Create the net

  1. 1Divide the 6 strands into 3 pairs. Work a chain of 20 with each pair (or use the hook to ch 20 on each strand separately).
  2. 2Join alternate pairs together with a dc about 15cm down, creating a diamond net pattern.
  3. 3Repeat this joining step 2-3 more times, spacing the joins about 10cm apart, to create the basket shape.

3. Base and finish

  1. 1Gather all strands at the bottom. Work a tight cluster of dc to form the base of the basket.
  2. 2Continue for about 5cm, then fasten off securely. Trim the ends or leave a decorative tassel.
  3. 3Pop your plant pot in and hang from a hook or bracket.

Top tip: Use a cotton or cotton-blend yarn — it is stronger than pure wool and will hold the weight of a potted plant without stretching.
