Step-by-step instructions
1. Make two hexagons
- 1Chain 4, join with sl st. Work granny clusters (3tr, ch2) six times into the ring — this gives you a hexagon instead of a square.
- 2Continue in granny stitch, working (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in each corner and 3tr clusters along each side.
- 3Keep growing until each hexagon is large enough that, when folded in half, the fold line reaches from your wrist to the opposite wrist across your shoulders (roughly 60-70cm point to point). Make two identical hexagons.
2. Fold and seam
- 1Fold each hexagon in half. Sew along the top edge from the fold to leave an opening for the sleeve on each side.
- 2Join the two folded hexagons at the back, leaving a neck opening at the top centre.
3. Sleeves and edging
- 1Work dc rounds around each sleeve opening, decreasing gradually for a tapered fit.
- 2Add a border of dc around the entire outer edge (fronts, hem, neck). Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
Top tip: Look up "granny hexagon cardigan layout" diagrams — seeing how the shape folds makes the construction click.
