Step-by-step instructions
1. Chain the height
- 1Chain 35 (this becomes the height of the hat from brim to crown).
2. Work rows sideways
- 1Row 1: dc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain to end. Ch1, turn.
- 2Row 2 onwards: dc in BLO of each stitch to end. Ch1, turn.
- 3Continue until the piece, when slightly stretched, wraps around your head (about 54-56cm). The BLO creates ribbed ridges.
3. Seam and gather
- 1Sl st the first and last rows together to form a tube.
- 2Thread yarn through the top edge stitches, pull tight to close the crown, and secure.
- 3Add a pom-pom if you like. Fold up the brim. Weave in all ends.
Top tip: Working into the back loop only is the secret to crochet ribbing — it looks just like knitted rib.
