Chunky Yarn at Mandy Bond

A firm chunky yarn holds its shape well for baskets — pick a neutral tone.

What you'll need

  • 2 x 100g balls of chunky yarn
  • An 8mm (UK 0 / US L-11) crochet hook
  • A wool/darning needle

Abbreviations

chchain
dcdouble crochet (UK)
sl stslip stitch

Step-by-step instructions

1. Base

  1. 1Chain 4, join with sl st to form a ring.
  2. 2Round 1: ch1, 8dc into ring, join. (8 sts)
  3. 3Round 2: 2dc in each st around. (16 sts)
  4. 4Continue increasing evenly (adding 8dc per round) until the base measures 20cm across.

2. Sides

  1. 1Stop increasing and work straight (1dc in each st around) for about 12-15cm.
  2. 2The fabric will naturally curve up to form the basket walls.

3. Top edge and finish

  1. 1Work 2 rounds of dc in a contrast colour for a decorative rim.
  2. 2Optional: add handles by chaining 10, skipping 5 stitches on each side, and working dc over the chains on the next round.
  3. 3Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Top tip: Use two strands of yarn held together for an even sturdier basket that really holds its shape.
