- A 4mm (UK 8 / US G-6) crochet hook
- A wool/darning needle
Tension: One shell repeat (5 tr) measures about 3cm on a 4mm hook.

Step-by-step instructions
1. Foundation
- 1Chain 151 (or any multiple of 6 + 1).
2. Shell stitch pattern
- 1Row 1: dc in 2nd ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, 5tr in next ch (shell made), skip 2 ch, dc in next ch*, repeat to end. Ch3, turn.
- 2Row 2: 2tr in first dc, *dc in centre tr of shell below, 5tr in next dc*, repeat, ending with 3tr in last dc. Ch1, turn.
- 3Row 3: dc in first tr, *5tr in next dc, dc in centre tr of shell below*, repeat to end. Ch3, turn.
- 4Repeat rows 2-3 until the blanket measures 90cm.
3. Border and finish
- 1Work 1 round of dc evenly around the entire blanket edge, working 3dc into each corner.
- 2Weave in all ends.
Top tip: A shell stitch blanket has a lovely drape — count your stitches at the end of each row to make sure the pattern stays even.
