Classic Cable Scarf
A timeless scarf with a gorgeous rope cable running down the centre. Cables are easier than they look — give it a go!

2 x 100g balls
~180g · ~280 metres

Approx. 18cm wide x 160cm long
What you'll need
- 2 x 100g balls of Aran yarn
- A pair of 5mm (UK 6 / US 8) knitting needles
- A cable needle
- A wool/darning needle
Tension: 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm in stocking stitch on 5mm needles.

Step-by-step instructions
1. Cast on
- 1Cast on 40 stitches with 5mm needles.
2. Cable pattern
- 1Rows 1, 3, 5, 7 (RS): p4, k8, p16, k8, p4.
- 2Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 (WS): k4, p8, k16, p8, k4.
- 3Row 9 (cable row): p4, C8B, p16, C8B, p4.
- 4Row 10: as row 2.
- 5Repeat rows 1-10 until the scarf measures 160cm. Cast off.
3. Finish
- 1Weave in all ends. Block gently if desired by laying flat on a damp towel and leaving to dry.
Top tip: Use a smooth, light-coloured yarn so the cable twists really stand out.
