Step-by-step instructions

1. Cast on

  1. 1Cast on 16 stitches with 5mm needles.

2. Work the cable pattern

  1. 1Row 1 (RS): p5, k6, p5.
  2. 2Row 2 (WS): k5, p6, k5.
  3. 3Rows 3-4: repeat rows 1 and 2.
  4. 4Row 5: p5, C6F, p5.
  5. 5Row 6: as row 2.
  6. 6Repeat rows 1-6 until the band fits snugly around your head when slightly stretched. A typical length is about 50cm.

3. Finish

  1. 1Cast off. Sew the two short ends together neatly. Weave in all ends.
  2. 2For a polished look, add a decorative button or short wrap of yarn over the seam.

Top tip: No cable needle? Use a pencil, or simply let the held stitches dangle at the front — they will not unravel in the time it takes to knit the next three.
