Step-by-step instructions
1. Cast on and rib the brim
- 1Cast on 88 stitches with 5mm needles.
- 2Work in k2, p2 rib (knit 2, purl 2 to the end of the row) for 8cm to form the fold-up brim.
2. Knit the body
- 1Change to stocking stitch: knit all stitches on RS rows, purl all stitches on WS rows.
- 2Continue until the hat measures 20cm from the cast-on edge, finishing after a WS (purl) row.
3. Shape the crown
- 1Row 1 (RS): *k6, k2tog* repeat to end. (77 sts)
- 2Row 2 and all WS rows: purl.
- 3Row 3: *k5, k2tog* to end. (66 sts)
- 4Row 5: *k4, k2tog* to end. (55 sts)
- 5Continue decreasing one stitch between the k2tog on every RS row until about 11 stitches remain.
4. Finish
- 1Cut the yarn leaving a 40cm tail. Thread it through the remaining stitches, pull tight and secure.
- 2Use the same tail to sew the side seam neatly. Weave in all ends.
- 3Make a pom-pom, tie it firmly to the top of the hat, and fold up the brim.
Top tip: For a slouchy fit, knit an extra 4-5cm before shaping the crown.
