Soft baby DK in sweet pastels — one ball makes several tiny hats.

What you'll need

  • 1 x 50g ball of soft DK baby yarn
  • A pair of 3.25mm (UK 10 / US 3) knitting needles
  • A wool/darning needle

Tension: 24 stitches and 32 rows to 10cm in stocking stitch on 3.25mm needles.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Cast on and rib

  1. 1Cast on 72 stitches with 3.25mm needles.
  2. 2Work in k1, p1 rib for 3cm.

2. Body

  1. 1Work in stocking stitch until the hat measures 10cm from the cast-on edge.

3. Shape and finish

  1. 1Row 1: *k4, k2tog* to end. Row 2: purl. Row 3: *k3, k2tog* to end. Continue decreasing until 6 sts remain.
  2. 2Thread yarn through, pull tight. Sew the side seam. Weave in ends.

Top tip: These tiny hats make wonderful gifts in pairs — one for the hospital bag, one for coming home.
